Shanghai Classical Hotel has
hosted heads of many countries, ambassadors and celebrities,
such as First Lady of Russia, Mrs. Putin, Singapore President
Nathan, former First Lady of China, Ms. Wang Guangmei,
well-known business man in Hongkong, Mr. Run Run Shaw,
and Indonesia¡¯s President Megawati, who came to Shanghai
to attend APEC conference.
Story
of Mrs. Putin
Shanghai, bathing in June¡¯s clear sunshine,
has fascined first ladies who came to Shanghai, accompanying
their husbands to attend Conference. Last noon Shanghai
Classical Hotel, a famoust hotel with more than one
hundred years¡¯ history, hosted a very special customer,that
is First Lady of Russia, Mrs. Putin.
The old-styled gramophone and Waston fan in Jixian Room
attracted her. The pictures of Hu Dei, Wang Renmei,
film stars in 1930s, interested her. The waiters explained
them to her.
As the managers worried that Mrs Pution might not know
how to use chopsticks, they placed a knife and fork
on the table. However, surprisingly, they found Mrs
Putin skillfully used chopsticks, except when she had
dry-fried sweet prawns.
Delicious dishes made Mrs Putin have a close look
at the menu set by national-grade chef Li Borong:

sliced fish with leek, bamboo and mushrooms, red-cooked
barracuda, lion¡¯s head with crabmeat, Sweet &
sour boneless yellow fish with pine nuts, Braised
chicken, bamboo and ham, rice-balls with pigeon egg,
steamed dumplings with crabmeat and so on . When the
waiters told Mrs Putin all the dishes were well cooked
by the pupils of Master Li, Gen Hongfei, gold medal
winner in 3rd Chinese Cuisine Competiton, and Qian
Yongfeng, gold medal winner in this year¡¯s China Chefs¡¯
Festival, Mrs. Putin couldn¡¯t help praising them.
After the meal, she took photos with Manager Xiao
Jianping, and signed her name on the fan-shaped menu.
Her retinues told the hotel that she had never signed
her name in public places before.

story of Singapore President Nathan
¡°Coming to Shanghai Classical Hotel, we enjoyed the
delicious food here and were thankful to you for your
excellent service.¡± That¡¯s what Singapore President
left on the signing book after dinging in Shanghai
Classical Hotel.
On September 19th, President and First Lady came to
Yuyuan Tourist Mart, visited Yu Garden. At noon President
and First Lady dined in Shanghai Classical Hotel.
Eight cold dishes, with their color, taste, and flavor,
attracted the guests. When sea cucumbers in shrimp
sauce, fried crab roe and braised chicken, bamboo
and ham were served, the guests couldn¡¯t help stopping
their chopsticks. When the lion¡¯s head with crabmeat
was served, President kept saying Delicious after
eating it up. The officials from Singapore said: ¡°President
doesn¡¯t like pork, but this time he was unexpectedly
fond of lion¡¯s head.¡±
After dinner, the officials of Singapor embassy in
China asked President to write something for the hotel.
And President gladly wrote what was mentioned at the
begining. Besides, he took photos with the waiters
and chefs, leaving a much-told story.

Story of Indonesia¡¯s President Megawati
Shanghai in October is agreeable with pleasing breeze.
On October 21st evening, Indonesia¡¯s President Megawati
specially came to Shanghai Classical Hotel to have
food of Shanghai regional cooking styles during
her attendance to APEC conference.
At round half past eight o¡¯clock in the evening,
the hotel was visited not only President, but her
husband and daughter as well. The waiters of the
hotel were lined to welcome the distinguished visitors.
And President nodded her head in return. In Jixian
Room, the dishes as follows were served: Shanghai
eight cold dishes, abalone wings with crabmeat,
dry-fried sweet prawns, crisp skin seafood rolls,
red-cooked barracuda, rice-balls with pigeon egg,
mushroom and vegetable stuffed buns. When the red-cooked
barracuda was served, the guests were amazed by
its red color, and tender meat. President kept saying
Delicious while taking it.
